19. How will the People’s Choice honoree be selected?

A selection committee consisting of Global Exchange board members, staff, allies, and noted activists will review each nominee and weigh the number of votes and other selection criteria.

The Committee is currently meeting to review each nomination. Selection of the People’s Choice Honoree will be based on the following evaluation criteria:

  • The number of votes from the public each candidate receives
  • Evidence of contribution to human rights struggles
  • Demonstration that the People’s Choice Award honor will strengthen and advance the candidate’s efforts and work

Additional Considerations:

The following questions will be reviewed during the selection process.

  • Would publicity and public recognition help make the person or group more effective?
  • Would the award provide the person or group with needed protection?
  • Is the U.S. government in any way responsible for the repression being denounced by the person or group?
  • Is this a political cause or issue that is important to spotlight for public education purposes and government watchdog efforts?

*Nominees will be disqualified if the selection committee believes that the nomination constitutes a conflict of interest–e.g. if the nominee is a Global Exchange staff or board member.

*Global Exchange reserves the right to remove ineligible or offensive nominations from the site.
