The 2012 Human Rights Awards Honorees:

2012 Human Rights Awards Honoree Annie Leonard captivates and compels millions to action through her creative films that call to our attention the high costs of our consumerism, the global impact of our throw-away technology, the corruption of our economic system, the pervasive use of toxic chemicals in our everyday products, and much more.  With more than two decades of experience investigating and organizing around environmental health and justice issues, Annie has made it her life’s calling to blow the whistle on important issues plaguing our world today.  She is currently the Co-Director of the Story of Stuff Project, which she founded in 2008 after she created the 2007 The Story of Stuff webfilm.

2012 People’s Choice Honoree PFC Bradley Manning:  We are proud to announce PFC Bradley Manning as the 2012 People’s Choice Honoree.  It takes great courage to stand for what you know is right. Bradley Manning, a 24-year-old Army intelligence analyst, is accused of leaking a video showing the killing of civilians, including two Reuters journalists, by a US Apache helicopter crew in Iraq. He is also charged with sharing the documents known as the Afghan War Diary, the Iraq War Logs, and embarrassing US diplomatic cables with the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks.  Although Bradley has not yet been tried, he was held in solitary confinement for the first 10 months of his incarceration. In one week in April 2011, over a half million people signed a petition to end his illegal treatment.  His supporters have grown to include over 300 top legal scholars, military personnel and civilians around the world.

Daniel Ellsberg, open government advocate and prominent whistleblower, will accept the People’s Choice Award on behalf of Bradley Manning.
