Global Exchange’s annual Human Rights Awards event recognizes extraordinary contributions to human rights worldwide. Since our first HRA in 2001, Global Exchange has recognized a diverse national and global pool of inspiring individuals and organizations that are dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights around the world.

5. How do I get there?

Traveling by Bike?

  • Bike racks are located around the corner on Chestnut Street near Columbus.

By Bus

  • The 30 Stockton bus and the Powell Street cable car stop within one block of Bimbo’s.

From the East Bay

  • Take Fremont Street exit off the Bay Bridge
  • Turn left on Pine Street
  • Turn right on Kearny
  • Veer left onto Columbus Avenue
  • Follow Columbus until you reach Chestnut Street
  • Bimbo’s is on the left hand side
  • Paid parking is available 1.5 blocks from Bimbo’s at The Hilton garage located at 590 Bay at Columbus

Going North on 101 or 280

  • Follow signs to the Bay Bridge
  • Take the Fourth Street exit
  • Turn left on Third Street (Third Street turns into Kearny after Market Street)
  • Veer left onto Columbus Avenue
  • Follow Columbus until you reach Chestnut Street
  • Bimbo’s is on the left hand side
  • Paid parking is available 1.5 blocks from Bimbo’s at The Hilton garage located at 590 Bay at Columbus

Going South on 101

  • As you exit the Golden Gate Bridge, follow signs to Lombard Street
  • Stay on Lombard Street until you reach Van Ness Avenue
  • Turn left on Van Ness Avenue
  • Turn Right on Bay Street
  • Turn Right on Columbus
  • Bimbo’s is one block down on the right hand side
  • Paid parking is available 1.5 blocks from Bimbo’s at The Hilton garage located at 590 Bay at Columbus

Mass Transit

If you’re planning to travel by mass transit, 511.org offers a free trip planning service.  Simply input your address as the starting point, supply the address of Bimbo’s 365 as your ending point, and the trip calculator will plan a route for you! You can choose to find the fastest route, or the most economical.

By Car

For driving directions, please visit Google maps.  It’s a free and easy way to get driving directions from anywhere in the country.  Simply navigate to the site, click on ‘directions’, input your address as the starting point, and add the address to Bimbo’s 365 as your ending point.  You will instantly receive driving directions and an estimate of how long the trip is going to take.

    9. Who can nominate and vote for the People’s Choice Award?

    This is an open and free web event and we invite all people who care about human rights as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to participate. (Voting has now closed on this event)

    10. Who is eligible to be a People’s Choice Award Nominee?

    We seek nominations of individuals or organizations who have made a substantial contribution to the advancement of human rights and justice. Nominees may be from any country and of any age. Nominations may be posted directly online at humanrightsaward.org or submitted by mail. To request a mail-in nomination form contact Corey Hill at 415.575.5537. Nominations must be posted on the website by 5PM April 19, 2011 and mail-in nominations must be received by 5PM April 18, 2011. Applicants should propose nominees who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of human rights. Nominees can be individuals or nonprofit organizations. Nomination requirements are few in order to encourage innovation and participation. (Voting is now closed on this event)

    13. Can I nominate someone even if they do not consider themselves an “Activist?”

    Yes. We seek nominations of individuals or organizations who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of human rights. However, this does not mean that your nominee need be a famous activist, or work for an organization similar to Global Exchange.

    14. How do I nominate and vote for the People’s Choice Award?

    To Vote:

    Click View and Vote. Once you have reviewed the various nominees and made your decision you may vote simply by clicking on the “Vote for this entry” button beneath the photograph, or above the written description of each nominee.

    Vote for one or more of your favorites: You may vote for as many nominees in each category as you like. You will not be able to vote more than once for the same nominee.

    Share with your friends by clicking the “Share” button.

    To Nominate:

    Select Your Nominee: Who do you want to nominate for the People’s Choice Award? You can nominate as many Human Rights Heroes as you wish. After selecting your nominee, look for video clips and/or photographs to share with viewers online. Feel free to research your nominee’s human rights efforts so that you may be able to describe them to us and to those viewing the nominations online.

    At this point you may be prompted to register/log in. Once you have registered you will be logged in automatically unless you log out.

    Choose Entry Type:

    Do you want to upload an Image? Or is your entry Text ONLY?
    A box will appear prompting you to choose which type of entry you will make: photographs, or a text only entry. Have all your files ready: one photograph, or the text for your text only entry.

    If you have a  photo to upload, you must upload this first and then add your description. If you do not have a  photo, simply choose “text” and upload your description. If you are not ready to upload files, you may click on the “back” arrow on your browser to return to the main Web site.

    Describe your entry.

    A box will appear asking you for the following information:

    • Title: What is your nominee’s name?
    • Tag: Enter a sub-category here. You will not see this once your nominee is posted.
    • Description: If you haven’t already, tell us about your nominee here. Please describe your nominee in your own words, though you may quote from other sources. You may write up to 150 words.

    These rules refer to the rules that the software will apply throughout the People’s Choice Award nomination and voting period. If you do not agree to these rules your nomination will not be posted.

    16. I found a picture of my nominee online, how do I upload it?

    You can upload an image file directly from your computer by going to the Nominate page, logging in, clicking on the “Browse” button and selecting the desired file from the folders in your computer (just as you would attach a file to an email).

    You can also link directly to a photo posted online. Select the option: “Add an image from a URL.” A new field will open where you can paste the URL. Please note however, that the image URL MUST end with “.jpg”, “.gif”, or “.png” (you, as the nominator, are responsible for ensuring you have all the rights, licenses, permissions and consents necessary to submit the photo.)

    17. How can I share the People’s Choice Award with my friends and family?

    Invite your friends and family to nominate and vote for THEIR Human Rights Hero from March 1 to April 19 and remind them to check back to view the results on June 1, 2011. Post humanrightsaward.org on Facebook, send it out over Twitter, post it on your website, email it out, and more. (This event has now closed)

    18. How many honorees will there be?

    One. They will be recognized at this year’s Human Rights Award gala and their work will be highlighted on our website, newsletter, and in the media.

    19. How will the People’s Choice honoree be selected?

    A selection committee consisting of Global Exchange board members, staff, allies, and noted activists will review each nominee and weigh the number of votes and other selection criteria.

    The Committee will meet after the contest closes on April 19th to review each nomination. Selection of the People’s Choice Honoree will be based on the following evaluation criteria:

    • The number of votes from the public each candidate receives
    • Evidence of contribution to human rights struggles
    • Demonstration that the People’s Choice Award honor will strengthen and advance the candidate’s efforts and work

    Additional Considerations:

    The following questions will be reviewed during the selection process.

    • Would publicity and public recognition help make the person or group more effective?
    • Would the award provide the person or group with needed protection?
    • Is the U.S. government in any way responsible for the repression being denounced by the person or group?
    • Is this a political cause or issue that is important to spotlight for public education purposes and government watchdog efforts?

    *Nominees will be disqualified if the selection committee believes that the nomination constitutes a conflict of interest–e.g. if the nominee is a Global Exchange staff or board member.

    *Global Exchange reserves the right to remove ineligible or offensive nominations from the site.

    23. Can I still sponsor the Human Rights Awards?

    24. What if I am having trouble voting?

    If you are having trouble placing your vote for your entry, leave the page by going all the way out of the site, then login or register FIRST, before you attempt to nominate or vote.

    You should be able to view nominees, then decide to nominate or vote, then a pop up window appears to register or sign in. (This event is now closed)
